How to Properly Maintain Cast Iron Wok to Avoid Rusting

Cast iron wok is a traditional Chinese cooking tool that is widely popular in the culinary industry for its unique material and design .Proper maintenance of cast iron wok to avoid rust can be carried out from the following aspects.

1、 Preparation Before Using Cast Iron Wok

Tearing off film and preheating: If it is a newly purchased cast iron wok, the protective film should be torn off before the first use, and the entire pot should be burned once to generate an oxide film (i.e. the surface of the pot turns blue and then black), which helps to enhance the durability and rust resistance of the pot.

2、 Precautions for daily Use of Cast Iron Wok

Avoid acidic substances: Try to minimize the use of acidic foods or seasonings, as they may corrode the surface of cast iron and affect the rust prevention effect.

Uniform heating: When using, ensure that the pot is uniformly heated to avoid local overheating that may cause deformation or damage to the pot.

Avoid empty burning: Do not burn the pot for a long time to avoid damaging the cookware and accelerating rusting.

3、 Cleaning and Maintenance of Cast Iron Wok

Timely cleaning: After cooking, the cookware should be cleaned promptly to avoid food residue adhering to the pot for a long time, which can cause rust. When cleaning, warm water and mild detergent (if vegetable cleaner) can be used, and strong acid and alkali cleaners should be avoided to avoid damaging the pot body.

Thoroughly dry: After cleaning, be sure to use a clean cloth or tissue to thoroughly dry the pot body, especially the bottom and edges of the pot that are prone to water accumulation. If conditions permit, the pot can be dried over fire to ensure there is no residual moisture.

Applying grease: After the pot is completely dry, a thin layer of edible oil (such as lard, rapeseed oil, etc.) can be applied to form a protective layer and prevent rusting. When applying, make sure that the grease evenly covers the entire surface of the pot, and use a tissue to wipe off excess grease.

4、 Long Term Storage and Maintenance of Cast Iron Wok

Dry storage: If the cast iron wok  is not used for a long time, it should be stored in a dry and ventilated place to avoid rusting in a humid environment.

Regular inspection: Regularly check whether the pot body has rust or damage, and if any is found, it should be dealt with in a timely manner. For minor rust stains, a soft cloth or wire brush can be used to gently remove them and reapply grease for maintenance.

Avoid heavy pressure: When storing, avoid placing heavy objects on the pot to prevent deformation or damage to the pot.

Through the above maintenance measures, the service life of cast iron wok can be effectively extended and rust problems can be avoided. Meanwhile, proper usage and timely cleaning and maintenance are also key to maintaining the good condition of cookware.
